Apex Software in the United States has been setting the standard
in sketching solutions since 1987. Today, Apex takes sketching to
the next level through their state of the art “Nexus” software for Tablet
PC, enabling users to create simple to complex drawings while
on-site. Nexus lets you draw directly on your Tablet PC just as you
would with pencil and paper. As you draw, your ink automatically
renders into lines, angles and curves that you can edit on the fly to
match your field measurements.
A local property valuation firm saw the potential impact of introducing
Nexus into their industry, and a joint venture business was
formed
with Apex Software to service Australasia, called Apex MobileTech.
Shortly after, Apex MobileTech engaged the services of SyncIT as their software development arm, of which the first task was to
develop a Tablet PC job management system for property valuation businesses to seamlessly integrate with Nexus.
The “Connexus” solution consists of a Web application, Tablet PC application, and a central server collocated in a Melbourne data centre. A property valuer's jobs are created using the website or the Tablet PC and an offline synchronisation process ensures the two are seamlessly interchangeable.
A basic Connexus job contains location information of the property, valuer instructions, appointment details and additional files such
as photos and property documents. From within this job, a valuer can launch Nexus and create a sketch of the building or property, as well as collect more detailed information about the site. |

To finalise the job, the valuer is able to use the Tablet PC to lookup comparable properties that have recently sold in the area and attach these as references to the current valuation. Connexus will then perform the necessary calculations to assist the valuer in reaching a conclusion. The finished job is synchronised and made available to the office staff through the Connexus website for further processing.
It was anticipated from the beginning that major property valuation firms currently using their own job management software would want to adopt the mobile component of the Connexus technology. This would only be a viable option if data integration services were available. SyncIT has developed data integration services in the form of Web Services.
An extensive list of functions was developed to assist integrators to send and receive data between their system and Connexus. Accessible across all platforms, Web Services are a controlled means of letting integrators into the Connexus data based on their account privileges, without exposing the central database itself to tampering. With functions such as AddJob, UpdateJobByID and GetJobByID, third party developers can quickly write a Connexus integration
mechanism into their existing systems.
The future looks bright for Apex MobileTech, with major national valuation firms such as Megaw & Hogg taking on the Nexus and Connexus technology.
Apex MobileTech also plans to adapt the technology to suit other industries in the near future.
